Nielsen who?

Jakob says that…

Blog postings will always be commodity content: there’s a limit to the value you can provide with a short comment on somebody else’s comments. Such postings are good for generating controversy and short-term traffic, and they’re definitely easy to write. But they don’t build sustainable value.

Maybe if Mr. Nielson had a blog he’d still be part of the conversation - and relevant.

With the current styles of communication available on the web, bottom-posting is even more relevant.

If I want a quick conversation, I’ll do it via IM. Email is for longer conversations that may only be checked a few times a day.

Email is communication, and I craft my emails in order to communicate in the best way to the recipient so they can easily understand.

Your argument only works for a small subset of person-to-person emails that happen at a rapid rate.

Most of this debate pertains to proper behavior on mailing lists. On a mailing list, 99% of the time you are not reading something you just wrote. Your post could be read years later in the archives.

In my opinion, the most civilized way is to edit out an excerpt and bottom-post below that in your reply. This way you include only the text you are replying to, which makes much more sense when read days or hours later. Small mobile screens make this even more appropriate.

topfunky: Indeed, I just have an allergic reaction to blanket statements smile

I also find that the way I communicate much of the time is via that exact “small subset of person-to-person emails that happen at a rapid rate” which is what I was referring to.

For the record, I personally almost always edit and bottom post, unless of course the person I’m communicating with is likely to miss my message because it’s not where it “should be.” In that case I prefix my message with something like “My response is inline below” smile

Ah, so you are not a dyed-in-the-wool top poster. This blog article was more of a defense of bottom posters who were unkindly being referred to as “illiterate.” I see.

In that case, my work here is done. Thanks for the conversation.

Ahem, I meant “defense of top posters.”

See previous message for context. wink

Mary, pop toasting has never been nearly as contentious an issue. Go right ahead.
